Suburban wilderness. Wekiwa Springs State Park protects the main source of the Wekiva River and offers visitors a genuine wilderness experience literally across the street from suburbia and a mere 16 miles from downtown Orlando.
The Wekiva River is formed by Wekiwa Springs along with waters from the Rock Springs Run and Blackwater Creek, all protected under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. The springs are located at the base of a grassy hillside. An average of more than 42 million gallons of water per day emerge from a 15-20 feet deep crack in a large limestone shelf that’s easy for beginning free-divers to explore.
This state park also offers excellent hiking and camping possibilities. It accepts reservations for three extraordinary campsites along the Rock Springs Run that are accessible by canoe. One of the sites is immediately adjacent to a large Native midden, showing that humans have prized these waters for centuries.
